I'm not one to tell people how to act at youth sporting events... I'm especially not one to tell parents how to act at sporting events, but it might help a lot of people if I was one to do such things.  My advice, were I the type to give advice, would be to cheer for your team.  Cheer for your child.  Stay away from "negative" cheering (yelling negative things at the other team).  I'm not real big on yelling at refs/umpires (I think Coach Hatley beat this out of me when I played for him)... I get it on a huge blown call, but if you're going to complain about every call then it gets old.  A wise man from my college days (we called him Dumpy) once told me, "If you bitch about something, it shows you care. If you bitch about everything, you're just a bitch".  Also, at some level you have to let the coach... well... coach.  I know it's hard when dealing with young kids (but you should still do it), but at the latest by the time they're in high school you need to stick to the role of cheering/support.  I was at a soccer game the other night to watch my very all-around talented niece Ansley and her high school team play against Wando.  Wando won in overtime and I have to say I thought they should have done better.  I give credit to Ansley and her teammates for making it an exciting game.  Why do I think Wando should have done better?  Because from what I could tell sitting in the stands, there were about 10 Wando volunteer coaches sitting around me. By the end of the game, I felt like I should be given a medal for making it out of there without punching anyone. I didn't even cuss anyone out (I have to give Mom credit for that... having her sit next to me probably kept me from doing anything). I don't want to make this sound like I'm picking on one school over another, because every school has issues like this.  And it's not new, because I could hear it while I was playing. From experience, I can tell you it takes the fun out of the game for the fans and the players.  Of course, not all yelling is bad.  I've been known to poke a little fun at Mom for yelling "Hit the ball!" every time I walked up to bat.  At first, I wanted to yell back "I'M TRYING!!!!", but over the years it became something I would listen for and it would make me smile.  But yelling "Hit the ball!" three or four times a game during a lull in the action isn't the same as yelling instructions during the action (and then being pissed when the 16-18 year old girl on the field wasn't able to follow the instructions).  Like I said, I don't want to pick on Wando over this (well, I do, a little... but I have been around worse).  Just, everyone, try to be better.  And if you can't be better, don't sit near me.
